Acceptance
String is a project built by a group of Carnegie Mellon University students to help people meet new friends through shared real-world plans. We are not a commercial service and are not liable for any interactions, meetings, or outcomes that arise from using the app. By using String you agree to these Terms and Conditions. If you do not agree, do not use the app. Your acceptance is recorded when you complete onboarding.
Eligibility
You must be at least 18 years old to use String. You must be a real person — no bots or automated accounts. You must be legally capable of entering into a binding agreement. Accounts are personal and non-transferable. By creating an account you confirm you meet these requirements.
Your account
You are responsible for all activity under your account. You must provide accurate information at onboarding — fake profiles are a reportable offence. Your username cannot be changed once set. You must not share your account or login credentials with anyone else.
What String is and is not
String facilitates introductions between two adults for in-person meetups. String is not responsible for what happens during or after a meetup. A confirmed event means two users have agreed to meet — String does not verify the identity, background, or intentions of any user. String is not a background-check service, a dating safety guarantee, or a crisis response service. Meetups are entirely voluntary. You may cancel at any time before the event starts.
Safety
Meet in a public place for your first String meetup. Tell a friend or family member where you are going and who you are meeting. Do not share home addresses, financial information, or other sensitive personal details with a match through chat. String chat is not end-to-end encrypted — do not treat it as a private channel. If you feel unsafe during a meetup, leave. If another user has threatened or harassed you, report them in-app and, if necessary, contact local emergency services. String cannot intervene in real-world situations.
Acceptable use
You must not create fake, impersonating, or misleading profiles. You must not upload profile pictures of other people without consent. You must not use String to harass, threaten, stalk, or intimidate any person. You must not solicit money, financial information, or gifts from other users. You must not use String for commercial solicitation, advertising, or spam. You must not automate interactions or use bots. You must not attempt to circumvent blocks by creating new accounts. You must not attempt to access another user's account, the admin panel, or any non-public part of the system. You must not scrape or harvest user data. You must not use the platform to facilitate any illegal activity.
Your content
You retain ownership of content you post (bio, event descriptions, chat messages, profile pictures). By posting, you grant the String team a non-exclusive, royalty-free license to store, display, and transmit your content to operate the service. You are responsible for ensuring your content does not infringe third-party rights. Profile pictures are publicly visible — do not upload images you consider private. String does not pre-screen content but reserves the right to remove any content that violates these Terms.
Weekly Exclusives and automated matching
Weekly Exclusive events are created by String and use automated matchmaking to pair two opt-in users based on proximity, gender preferences, age preferences, and interests. Matching is algorithmic — String does not manually review individual pairings. A match notification is typically sent approximately 6 hours after a match is made. You may decline a match without penalty. Declining because you want a different person keeps you in the pool for that week. Declining because you dislike the activity removes you from that vibe. String does not guarantee you will be matched.
Reporting and blocking
You may report another user for spam, harassment, fake profile, inappropriate content, safety concern, or other reasons. Reports are reviewed by the String team periodically. String may take action including warnings, suspension, or permanent ban. You may block any user at any time. Blocking prevents them from seeing your events in the feed and from exchanging join requests with you. String does not guarantee a specific outcome for any report, does not guarantee a response time, and does not disclose the resolution to the reporter. Report and block records are retained even after account deletion.
Notifications and push
String sends in-app notifications for core events (join requests, matches, cancellations, chat messages). Push notifications require your explicit permission and are optional. You can revoke push permission in your device or browser settings at any time. String may also send system announcements via notification.
Suspension and termination
String may suspend or permanently terminate your account for any material violation of these Terms, following a substantiated safety report, or if required by law. You may delete your own account at any time through the app settings.
Intellectual property
The String name, logo, design, and software are the property of the String team. You may not copy, modify, reverse-engineer, or redistribute any part of the String service.
Disclaimers
The service is provided as-is and as-available without warranties of any kind. String makes no warranty that the service will be uninterrupted or error-free, or that matches will result in successful meetups. String is not liable for any harm, injury, loss, or damage arising from or related to an in-person meetup facilitated through the platform. String is not liable for the conduct of any user before, during, or after a meetup.
Indemnification
You agree to hold harmless the String team from any claims, damages, or expenses arising from your use of the service, your violation of these Terms, or your interactions with other users in person.
Nature of this project
String is an informal student project, not a registered business or legal entity. We are a small team doing our best to build something fun and safe, and we appreciate your understanding.
Changes to these terms
String may update these Terms from time to time. We will make reasonable efforts to notify you of material changes via in-app notification. Continued use of the app after the effective date of the updated Terms constitutes your acceptance.
